This book recounts the lives of thirteen local people, born between 1923 and 1967, who share strong associations with North Shields Fish Quay and the mouth of the river Tyne in Northeast England. All have interesting stories to tell ranging from wartime experiences, fishing for a living, crewing of lifeboats, buying, selling and processing of fish, working for HM Customs & Excise and caring for the local bird life. These are hard-working folk, not afraid to ‘get their hands dirty’, whose important and very physical tasks have helped shape and form our community. Sea and river have coloured their lives, presenting many difficulties along the way. Such people are the ticking heart of Tyneside and help make this region unique.

As well as natural sealife, other fauna features in the book. This chapter includes birds as an essential part of the story. The coast, Tyne river mouth and headland are visited each year by many ... landbirds, seabirds and those of the shore and wetlands.
We discover how Eileen has cared for these creatures, and of her husband's important role with the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, whose base overlooks the Black Middens in the river mouth.
